Dubstep has been a part of my life for more than half of it. I grew up listening to tracks by Skrillex, Savant, and Virtual Riot; around the same time that dubstep — or rather, brostep — was at its peak, I began discovering music on my own online. Even back then, I was fascinated by the music and its otherworldly sound effects, and I’ve been trying to understand them better ever since. For me, this fascination is an important starting point and ultimately contributed to my decision to pursue a degree in electronic composition. In this paper, I would now like to compile my accumulated and new insights in order to apply them to the analysis of brostep.

An obvious — and arguably the most widely discussed — component of dubstep is its creative sound design. By contrast, questions of composition at the (micro-)structural level and within a music-theoretical context are at least as essential, yet at the same time significantly more difficult to define and discuss. This is precisely where the present thesis begins: The focus is less on the question of how dubstep is produced — for example, in the sense of an analysis of specific patches or sound synthesis in detail. Rather, I am interested in composition and arrangement, and why certain basslines work musically. Accordingly, this is an analytical, not a instructional, examination of the genre.

It was only through a more intensive examination of the genre term “dubstep” and its history within the framework of this paper that I became fully aware of the difference between the original genre — UK dubstep — and brostep, since I had hardly any exposure to the former during my youth. The following discussion therefore begins with the origins of dubstep and then addresses the distinction from brostep, with the actual analysis focusing on the latter.

With that in mind, the following research questions arise for me:

  1. How did dubstep and brostep emerge, and within what social context can this evolution be situated?
  2. How have basslines in dubstep evolved over time, and can structural differences between dubstep and brostep be identified?
  3. What is meant by “flow” in dubstep, and how does flow emerge within a bassline?

To answer these questions, this thesis is divided into two parts. The first part is devoted to the emergence, development, and differentiation of the genres from the early 2000s through the 2010s and identifies general musical characteristics. It thus servesmto answer the first and second research questions. The second part conceives of dubstep as an experimental, inherently sensual musical form and proposes a foundation upon which a detailed analysis of basslines can take place. The analysis of specific tracks and the phenomenon of “flow” take center stage. Based on these, observations from the first part can be confirmed, and the third research question can be addressed. The tracks Monxx – Falling (VIP), Skrillex – Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites, Knife Party – Centipede, and DJ Fresh – Louder (Doctor P & Flux Pavilion Remix), Savant – Black Magic and Black Magic (2), as well as Grey & Virtual Riot – RAVEN are examined with increasing levels of detail.
